Another great year for the RMA Golf Society
Ladies and Gentlemen,
What a great season; nine events in nine locations, two ‘overnighters’, nineteen new joiners, event attendance averaging twenty-two and book-ended by two weekends which attracted around twenty people.
The season opener at Dartmouth in March provided two days of excellent golf, a social evening, and the venue for our AGM. Later in March the Wyvern Trophy fell victim to the weather and in April Dainton Park should have gone the same way. Instead, we used it to enhance the RM reputation for Amphibiosity by playing in torrential rain while demonstrating a strong measure of cheerfulness in adversity. In May we assisted in the administration of the WC100 event at Exeter Golf and Country club which, thanks to Paul Denning’s efforts, raised twenty thousand pounds for the RM Charity.
Yeovil in June for the Not Forgotten Association (NFA) event where we carried the day thanks to Gerry Wotton’s amazing score (48?). July was Holsworthy, and the usual suspects enjoyed an ‘unofficial’ overnighter and a run-ashore in Bude. The rescheduled Wyvern Trophy was played in August, where we enjoyed the benefits of the fine weather. Honiton in September followed by a return to ‘Tivvy’ for the Turkey Trot in October. We closed the season in mid-October with a weekend at Asbury in N Devon. Ashbury’s a massive venue and provided us with great golf spread over two days, interspersed with an evening of world cup rugby and beer – doesn’t get much better.
Andy Proctor hit the longest drive of the season with a ridiculous effort of nearly 285 yards, and George Martin claimed the shortest with a stunning six-incher. ‘Speaking’ of George, one of our founder members and long serving committee member, finally won his first event by claiming victory at Honiton – did he also win nearest the pin? Ian (the answer’s Holsworthy) Edwards enjoyed another good year by retaining his Order of Merit for the second year running and winning the ToP award – amongst numerous other ‘minor’ victories.
Paul D has done a great job again this year in ensuring we balance the books and remain in compliance with charitable financial rules. We ended the season with a healthy credit balance of £2,500. Pre-paying for venues places a strain on our modest resources and therefore it is vital that we, as members, continue to pay for our events on or before the due date. We were the beneficiaries of a generous grant from the RM Charity which we used to subsidise the Turkey Trot this year to ensure it remains accessible to all our members.
Next year we already have St Mellion booked for the opener weekend 16/17 March and entry is now open via the website Events (rmags.co.uk). We have also booked the main events so check out the website and add the dates to your diaries.
A personal thank you to all of you for your continued support of our society and to my fellow committee members for their hard work this year. RMA/TRMC Sports branches are still in their infancy and there are a still people who remain unaware of their existence. As we look ahead to the 2024 season, please continue to spread the word and encourage new members and guests to join us. Thank you again for your support and see you in the spring.
Yours in Golf,
Paul

DownloadHole in One
In the highly unlikely event that any of us should ever get a hole in one, Sid Foulston has it covered! Yes, Sid has already 'sculpted the RMAGS hole in one trophy.
New Most Golf Award
Syd Foulston has kindly donated a number of trophies to The RMAGS to be awarded to the player who achieves the 'most golf'. Made by his own fair hands, the award symbolises a person taking their dog for a walk. For those of us who are past recipients of the 'Most Golf' award, we know well the feeling that our time might have been better spent walking the dog. Thanks Syd, for donating an award the nobody wants to win!
Please note the above and if anyone would like to add anything to the agenda please do so via our website or in person at the meeting. All of us on the committee are up for reelection and if anyone would like to volunteer for any of our roles you are most welcome to do so. The link takes you to your committee members and their roles. We always welcome new blood and it would be great to have some new faces on the committee. The minutes of last year's meeting are available to download here
